# DIMENSIONS OF PHYSICAL QUANTITIES & UNITS

## Objectives

**By the end of this course/topic, a learner should be able to:**

- Define a
**physical quantity**and give examples with their S.I units, - Distinguish between
**fundamental (basic or base)**and**derived**quantities, give examples of each with their S.I units, - Define
**dimensions of a physical quantity**, - State the uses or applications of the knowledge of dimensions of a physical quantity,
- Use the concept of dimensions of physical quantities to
**check for the consistency**of equations and to**derive equations**(not so much emphasized), - Define or distinguish between
**Scalar**and**Vector**quantities and give examples of each, - Resolve components of a vector quantity, add or subtract vectors using the component method,
- Solve numerical values.
